Humanistic Psychology

During the first half of the 20th-century, behaviorism and psychoanalysis dominated psychology. In response, humanistic psychology emerged as a new approach, which Abraham Maslow called "the third force" in psychology. While behaviorism dismissed the role of choice and psychoanalysis focused on abnormal psychology and mental illness, humanistic psychology instead stressed the importance of free will and self-determination.
