Problems With Sleep Deprivation - From the Psychology Forums

Saturday July 26, 2008

infinitecuriosity writes: "I have a problem. I seem to have trouble getting myself to bed on time, and end up staying up far to late and having to get up early in the morning. It's not that I'm super busy at night- in fact, I usually have plenty of time to get ready for bed and develop an appropriate routine, however I do not. My intentions are always good early on in the evening, but when bed time rolls around, I purposefully find distractions such as the internet, television, or just about anything really to avoid going to bed. I usually will wait until I'm so tired that I can't keep my eyes open before I actually go to bed, and then when I do get into bed, I start experiencing stress about not getting enough sleep and having to wake up early.

It is a peculiar cycle, and it seems silly to me. I don't understand why I'm sabotaging my sleep, and why every day I tell myself, "I'm going to go to bed on time tonight!", but I always end up staying up late doing something stupid and unimportant. (frequently I'm surfing the web). Why do I delay my bed time when I know it's going to make me stressed, tired, and useless the next day?"
