Grade Level

8th grade through college-level

Objectives

Help student think realistically about the future and consider how their present actions will help them reach their goals.

Homework and Assessment

Students are asked to pretend that they are attending their 10 year high school reunion. The instructor should create a questionnaire that asks such things as what their occupation is, if they are married and how many children they have.

Lesson Plan Title and Description

"Looking Forward to Your 10 Year High School Reunion"

The instructor should start by creating a worksheet that asked questions about each student's life. Students should answer these questions as if it is ten years in the future.

The goal of the assignment is to help students try to see where they want to be at that point in their lives. After students have completed the worksheet, divide them into groups of three or four and have them research and discuss the steps they need to go through in order to achieve their goals.

Materials and Resources Needed

-"Reunion" questionnaire; create a list of questions for students to answer.

-Research materials to explore different career options. Internet resources can be useful, or you can check the school library for information on specific job paths.

Advice

  • Have students share their goals in small groups is a good way to get them to be realistic about their future goals. Other students can offer feedback and encouragement.
  • As you are making the "Reunion" questionnaire, try to be as specific and in-depth as possible. Ask about finances, personal relationships, happiness, family, etc. Get students to think beyond just what they want to "do when they grow up."
